When high nip pressure is applied to the journals of a long industrial roller, the steel core inevitably deflects. Even a microscopic bend causes excessive nip pressure at the roll ends while leaving the center slack. This leads to premature edge wear, uneven dye extraction, and fabric bagginess.
Crowning is the deliberate grinding of a parabolic or crowned diameter increase toward the center of the roll face. Under operating nip load, the crowned surface deflects into a perfectly straight line, providing 100% uniform pressure across the entire web.
At United Rubber & Engineering Works, our heavy cylindrical lathes calculate and grind precise crowning curves matched to your machine's linear nip load in kilograms per centimeter.
